Dynamics NAV (Navision) is able to run on its own native C/SIDE database server, or on a SQL database. In each case Navision has its own specific configuration requirements.

This article describes how to configure a Native server for Dynamics NAV. You can also down load the file in Visio format:

Navision C/SIDE Server

If you have say a 50 user system, with a 50 Gig database, then you Navision server will be something like:

  • CPU P2 500Mhz.
  • RAM 1.5 Gig
  • Disks:
    • C: - RAID 1 2x10GiG - Windows 2000 + Navision Server.
    • Drive K thru P (6 sets) - RAID 1 2x10Gig - 10 Gig DB parts 1-6 Total 60 GIG DB 10 GIG per Array

NOTE that the NAV native server database parts must ONLY be configured on RAID 1 arrays. Never use RAID 5.

Physical configuration

This is how the drives could be physically connected to the machine. NOTE that many controllers do not allow the spreading of RAID sets across multiple controllers. Manufacturers do this, since they realize people will pay more money for this level of reliability, and thus generally offer a Higher end controller to allow this, at an exaggerated premium cost.

Logical configuration

This shows how the drives will appear logically to Dynamics NAV. (Note that NAV will automatically create each of the commit caches and assign a Slave.exe task to manage it. NAV commit cache can not theoretically exceed 666meg.
